Develop a Line
Practicing is the main factor to becoming skilled as a driver. This is when you get to realize how your car, and your driving adjust to a track or layout. Take it slow at first imagine your car going corner to corner hitting target spots. We identify them as targets since it's the target that you want the inside front tire of your car on each lap. These targets are normally a few inches from the edge of the rail on the corner. The gap from the rail you target depends on your skill. The purpose is to drive with your inside tire passing exactly over all targets on every lap. The more certain you become of your target locations and the better you can judge these targets, the sooner your lap times will quicken. Always stay on or beyond your target. If you find you are inside your target then two things will happen: 1. You crash a lot, or 2. You are more advanced than you thought and need to set your or targets closer to the rail. It’s key to stay beyond your target to guarantee you are clearly hitting your target. The line to drive is dependant on locating the best targets on each corner. During practice laps, avoid going fast simply concentrate on placing the car near the targets.
With each lap you will become more certain of the position of these targets and how to place your car near them. You will start to drive a tight line ultimately goal of always hitting each target point on every lap. Most importantly remember these targets so you can take optional routes when there are pile-ups, lap traffic or corner marshals in your way. Get a feel for the line you like the most. Get relaxed with the target locations and then you can develop your driving skill further. When you are driving a corner make a decision how well you took it according to the target and speed. Be aware of the sticky section of the track and then branch out. Center your attention on the areas of the track that require the most awareness. During practice, concentrate on the corners that you have the most trouble with, work on those corners until they are easier. It's a good to frequently assess your performance in each corner as you're racing, and with each lap try to get closer to your target while maintaining as much speed as possible. It is crucial to use your practice time, race heats and main to improve upon your line of attack. These races, just like your practice, are tools that help in becoming an improved overall driver. Evaluate lap times with other drivers in the heat postings to see how consistent you are and how the other drivers compare. Back to RC tips |
